Casitas Kennedy

Tegucigalpa

The Casitas Kennedy orphanage is named for its numerous cabins housing all ages: newborns and toddlers, young boys, and teenage girls. Its name was given in the early 1960's from a Peace Corp initiative under the Kennedy administration.

Orphan Helpers employs four staff members at Casitas. They teach the children how to read and write, hold a Bible Study and discipleship classes each afternoon, counsel the children, and offer advice and encouragement. They also offer sewing and beautician classes, and the teenage girls are encouraged to train in these vocational skills.

Most of the teenage girls have been sexually abused. When they turn 18, they have “aged-out” of the orphanage, and many have no place to go. The vocational classes give the girls a chance to learn a skill that they can use to secure a future job. This gives the young women an opportunity to provide for themselves in a positive way, rather than returning to dependency, begging, or prostitution.

Many mission teams visit this center and assist our staff by offering evangelism and encouragement.  In the past, mission teams have served through puppet shows, sports camps, drama skits, Bible studies, and craft activities.
